Dr. Samuel M谩rquez to Receive 2009 Basmajian Award

Brooklyn, NY - Samuel M谩rquez, PhD, assistant professor of anatomy and cell biology, has been chosen to receive the prestigious 2009 Basmajian Award from the American Association of Anatomists, to be presented at its annual meeting in New Orleans in April.
Dr. M谩rquez is co-discipline director of gross anatomy in the College of Medicine, director of gross anatomy in the School of Health Professions, and director of the Anatomical Donor Program.
The Basmajian award, one of the most coveted prizes in the American Association of Anatomists, is given in recognition of demonstrated ability as a teacher of gross anatomy and recognition of outstanding research contributions.
Born and raised in the South Bronx and the son of immigrant parents from Colombia, Dr. M谩rquez is a graduate of the Bronx High School of Science and Lehman College. He received his doctorate in physical anthropology from the City University of New York, working in the laboratory of Dr. Jeffrey Laitman at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. There, he began his study of the paranasal sinuses, which continues to be his primary research interest. Last November, Dr. M谩rquez guest edited a special issue on "The Paranasal Sinuses: The Last Frontier in Craniofacial Biology鈥� for the leading journal in his field, The Anatomical Record.
Upon joining 每日大赛入口 Downstate in 2002, Dr. M谩rquez worked under M.A.Q. Siddiqui, PhD, distinguished service professor and chair of anatomy and cell biology. Recalling the importance of that experience, Dr. M谩rquez says, "I'm cognizant of all those whose efforts enabled me to follow my passions. Now it's my turn to open doors, as my mentors opened them for me."
